Bustle Gowns and Romulans!

I'm very, very much looking forward to this weekend. I will finally have the house to myself! This means that I can completely invade the living room and sew, sew, sew!
The other day, I picked up the cotton for the bustle petticoat, which was on sale for $1.99/yard. So, I'm planning on a ruffly, fluffy petticoat, and I'm super excited. I've wanted to tackle this petticoat for a while, and I'm finally getting it!
I'm also going to try and get as much done on the taffeta bustle gown as possible. I think I can at least get the basic pieces cut out, and maybe even finish the overskirt. I know I won't be able to finish everything in one weekend, especially with finals coming up and a couple of term projects needing completion, but I think I can knock out a large chunk of it!
Is it weird that I'm actually looking forward to ironing all those pleats? 'Cause I am.

Also, time is marching forward, and the Vegas Star Trek convention is fast approaching! I think I'm going to start on one of my planned costumes soon, a Romulan Tal Shiar officer.
I had one hell of a time trying to find suitable Romulan fabric. I tried to find something with a check type pattern, something with a geometric pattern, anything that looked similar to the screen fabrics. Nothing!
I finally came across this fabric on Ebay, which reminded me of the fabric of the Tal Shiar uniform that Deanna Troi wears in the episode "Face of the Enemy".
I'm thrilled with the fabric, it's going to be perfect. I'm not exactly looking forward to quilting this thing, but it will look awesome once it's all finished, so I'll put up with it. I'm also going to see about casting rubber for the first time. I have to make the shoulder...thingies...I think they have something to do with displaying rank...and the phaser holster. They're nice small pieces to test out how well I take to casting rubber. If all goes well, then I may tackle my ultimate Star Trek costume want - full Cardassian military armour. Hehe. Between the Romulan bits and the Cardassian armour, I'm going to try a Klingon breastplate. It's a nice intermediate piece - not too big, lots of detail work, and it will be a nice stepping stone to a full armour piece. Yeah, I'm a little ambitious, but I'll look awesome. ;-)

    1. Hello! Unfortunately, this still sits on my 'in-progress' pile, as I can't figure out how to make the sleeves satisfactorily. I do plan on attacking this costume again very soon, as I'm determined to get through my in-progress pile and clear out some of my unfinished past projects.

Where are you on your uniform? Perhaps I can offer some ideas. :)
