First Contact Day

In 49 years, we will make contact with the first alien species we ever meet, the Vulcans, on April 5. According to Star Trek, anyway. To celebrate, I decided to have a little dinner party, complete with alien foods and Starfleet uniforms.

Of course, the command corgis also made an appearance.

For food, I started with Vulcan plomeek soup. It's made from sweet potatoes, beets, celery, carrots, onions, and garlic, and is quite tasty. I wasn't sure how it would turn out, since Vulcan food is usually described as "bland", but it was delicious!

For mains, we, of course, had Cardassian food - zabu meat in a white yamok sauce, over Terran pasta. Zabu is one of Cardassia's few livestock animals, and the meat can be anywhere from emerald green to pure white. The darker the green color of the meat, the richer the flavor. Unfortunately, living on Earth, it's hard to get good zabu, but the white varieties available here are still quite good.

To finish, we had Thalian chocolate mousse, with icoberry cream. Real Thalian chocolate mousse is made from beans aged 400 years, and is quite the delicacy. Our version was not quite so extravagant, but it was still deliciously rich. Icoberries are a black, knobby berry that grow in abundance in not only the Cardassian system, but on many planets throughout the quadrant. It's heartiness makes it easy to cultivate, so it's a favourite ingredient in many desserts. The acidity of the berries also helps cut through the richness of the chocolate mousse.

I hope everyone had a great First Contact Day!
